Seventh Grade Language Arts Classroom...Bring on the Learning

Classroom: Language Arts

Concept: Same as above, I worked to unite this concept in the two spaces to introduce circualtion into the classroom space.

There are several nook type spaces within the space. Relating back to the idea of the Zoning areas of the circulation spaces. There is also band of color coming into the room from the circulation zoning bridging the two together.

*The Computer station nook takes after directly from the zoning in the hallway becuse of the drop down lumicor tranparent panel lit from above as well as the wall and floor material color change. This is trying to make this feel like a seperate little room.

*The teachers desk is putting the teacher directly facing the students and in closer proximity to all the storage needs. There is also a desk where students can come and talk with the teacher one on one.

*The book casings connect this nook to the next which is the reading nook.

*The shelving that is coming away from the wall creates a private nook for students to study, read, or work on a group project. There is a fold down bench which can be put away when no in use to allow more room for desk in the space if needed.

NGMS FINAL Circulation through Colorization

The spaces branching off the circulation pathways are signified be the wrapping of color around the entrances of the space.This is used as way finding from one end of the hallway down so that when the users of the space are passing through they can see that everywhere there is color there is a change the context of the space. This signifies classrooms, gym, auditorium, etc. The flooring color changes as well as the wall color. The ceiling color is made able to appear to change because of the drop down plane of an eco resin panel made by lumicor which is lit from above. This makes one feel like they are in a space within a space.

The locker systems also coordinate with the color wrapping, the top shelf of lockers taking from one zone while the bottom shelf takes from another and connects the two visually in the space.
The lockers were designed so that safety of those on the bottom was considered and gives them less of a chance of being hit in the head.

The signage frames are similar though varying in size so that no matter if it is a classroom name plate of a flyer...the eye will notice and pick up that in this product there is information that they need to read. The bulletin board frame takes the same form as well.
The frames are composed of plywood waste product and recycled glass.

This is a new presentation aid I was trying out though unfortunately it never made it into my final presentation due to the hard time I had with the presentation template. I had seen one of Frank Harmon's presentations last year at DATS and he had a graphic plan that laid out the entire site using words that described each space's use. He even had some of the words in the shape of their use. I was completely inspired. I did this and added in the center,where the students would experience a variety of learning styles, which influenced the design, layout, and overall feel of the room.

C O N C E P T

Concept: Derived from the idea of Lichen ( a COMPOSITE organism of the association between fungus + algae) Lichen occurs in EXTREME environments. This correlates directly to the idea of specific zones for special moments, entrances and space.
Lichen also has the ability to penetrate through cell walls. The Zones in the circulation spaces also penetrate through the walls, spilling over into the spaces that they are signifying. ( This can be seen in the far right section....yellow band at the entrance.)

Back to the drawing board. Janel and I decided to focus on the room and get away from the idea and form that the lecturn had become in our minds and in our sketches. After developing the concept of "MATRIX" by looking deeper into learning systems and theories and the term special relativity ( our group name ) we felt that this idea relayed many interesting connections that could be related back to our goals for the space.

The lectern's new form has less mass ( mass + energy idea relates back special relativity.), is mobile, and versatile. We felt like making this piece so modular that it really opened up the space to the user's specification and allowed the room to be set up in the most favorable way for that day.

sprouts: an eco baby store

When givin the opportunity to choose a retail business that we will be designing everything from logo and graphics to store layout, the first item that popped into my head was something involving ecobaby. So many of my friends have been having babys lately and when looking for gifts I have noticed that there are not really any stores that offer well designed as well as "green" baby items. I see alot of these items on the web, but it is nice to actually be able to pick up an item and touch it before purchasing it and finding out what that experience will be like when it arrives in a box at your door.

I found alot of great products to offer from many great companies. Everything from baby clothing, toys, feeding, bedding, hygiene products to mommy gear like diaper bags and slings/wraps and even furniture.
This store would draw people from all over because there is nothing else like it around and the items have been made popular all over the internet already. Plus everyone wants a healthy, happy baby and always want the best for them.

Process:
After studying and deliberating over what to choose as my "concept" for this project I feel as though I have reached a conclusion so that I can finally move on into designing the space. The basis for my concept is SEED.
So the idea is from many different aspects of my project. The store [which is currently without a name] focuses on products that are environmentally friendly. So right away this picks up a "NATURAL" connotation. Also the consumer is going to be a mom, dad, grandma... basically someone shopping for a kid+/baby so this also give you the idea of "GROWTH". Then we go back to the "eco" aspect and the idea of dealing with a new baby + children. You 'sow what you reap'. Teaching children while they are young to be environmentally responsible so that it grows with them... spreading the seed of responsibility.

Some of my finds at Revolution Mills, trying to get a feel for the space and develop some new ideas conceptually...
My professor, Suzanne Cabrera, challanged us as a class to capture images of the old Mill that siezed the character. By photographing "found objects" we started to learn more about the history and uniqueness of this historic site.

Here are some sketches that started my brainstorming process on the retail space for my new concept and product [ modern ruins + pets ] ReUse is going to be a major element that will connect the concept to the product of a pet adoption center. Since the dogs that will be in the space will be abandoned and at one time unwanted the materials used in the space will also be deserted objects. Contrast of the "modern ruins" and the life ermerging from within is an idea I borrowed from Christina who had this concept/product duo before me. So I will focus on contrast of materials and the organic elements growing within ( from walls, indoor grassy areas, and the extension of the space outdoors).

This is a preliminary sketch that shows what might become a midfloor fixture. This would be a point of contact between people and pets. There are places for the dogs to drink water and a treat bar for visitors to share with the dogs. There are also leash hooks for the pooches who are visiting with their owners or new pets leaving with their forever homes.

After practically having a nervous breakdown the night before the first deadline of the project was due ( because of the dead ends I kept reaching ) I took a step back from what was not working and got a little looser and allowed myself to be more creative. I got so fixated on the deadline that I felt chained to this first thought. I realize that the point of this project was to go back to first year in the sense that we shouldnt get caught up in codes and other building restraints but to think big and be creative. Unfortunatly I did the opposite. However I started to see this on Friday and was able to pull myself away from that first iteration and allow myself to start to push it farther.

I decided to go back to some of the other ideas I thought of orinally along with "pixelation". The words motion, light, glow, blur. The idea that one might interact in the space the way that they interact with a game was another factor that I wanted to display. I also wanted to relate the concept to the product.

Interactive, Integrative, and Inspirational. These are just three of the qualities we wanted to achieve when producing this luminaire. The users of the space, where this light wall would be installed, control the illumination process both
intentionally as well as unknowinly. This wall would be a focal point in the space, which would draw the occupantsto it as it
encourages interaction between the people and the installation. The light that is emitted from the luminaries evokes
a playful mood in this social atmosphere. The luminaire’s shape evolved from the idea that different types
of wavelengths would be the determining factor in the changing of the light being emitted. Sound waves, heat waves, and
vibrations were some of the initial features that we thought bout initially that would allow the light changes to occur with human interaction. The form of the luminaire follows the curves and undulations that are reminiscent of a wave like pattern. The name of this light, onda, is the Spanish translation of the word wave. As the project evolved, the idea came that this light source could be a converter of the senses ( delivered by the waves ) to light. It would be as if the different senses ( touch, sound, and smell ) were controlling this.

Day Light Box

On this second "light box model" we dealt with natural light as opposed to the previous light box which dealt with electric light. We started out making multiple small sketch models that helped see how shadow followed the form of the positive space that remained after we cut away space. We decided that instead of taking mass away from a box that we would sculpt the space from the inside out. The curvilinear roof in the "public" space creates fascinating patterns of light on the floor. there is a change in floor level in this space as well which ultimately leads you to the "private" meditation space. This space also has interesting patterns cut away from the wall surface to let the light come in through an opaque surface as well. However we found that this space was not as effective as the public space perhaps because of the difference in scale or because of the change in the shape of the roof. We learned a lot about light and shadow as well as positive and negative space.

The annual Design and Technology Symposium was held at UNCG in March of 2008. I worked on this Installation with a great group of my fellow students. We used the same plywood panels that were provided from last years event. But with a growing number of exhibitors along with the exhibitor's request for more space, we developed a new system for the panels by adding a few other materials and lots of man ( and woman!) power. The event was a complete success!

This project for a charette I participated in for a Design Symposium. The idea was for students from different schools to come together and create ideas to promote voting through different environments, graphics, advertisements, and systems. Our group focused on designing a new environment that could be flat packed and transported anywhere, indoors or outdoors. We were also proposing the idea that Voting Day should be made a national holiday so that people were given the day off from both school and work so that we as Americans could come together to celebrate this freedom many people around the world do not have.

This is my proposal for a presentation station, which was my final project for the first semester studio of my third
year. The idea was that instead of manipulating surfaces and systems in a room, I would develop a product that could function independently. Since it contains a LCD screen, which can project images directly from a lap top connected through and hdmi to dmi converter cable, the need for a projector would be eliminated, allowing the user to project anywhere an outlet is provided. Another important function of this piece is the fiber optic snake camera which allows one to project images from their model onto the screen. The adjustable model stand also displays the users model, which is often neglected on the floor or on a last minute bench. The form is clean and simple so that nothing will be taken away from whatever is being presented, but also when the piece is not in use and is standing in the corner, will still be an intriguing piece to look at.

After building the model of the chair found in a painting, we were given the assignment to design and build a bench based off of what we learned by looking at the painting, the artist, and building the model. We had two weeks to design and build our piece. my bench uses mortise and tenon joinery and the materials used are peruvian walnut and red maple.

GRAFTING | INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LIVING [detailed student dorm spaces]
This was my final project for spring 2007. It was a continuance from the group work and concentrated on the actual living space of the students. the space we worked with was a 3200 square foot space for 12 student which included two living quarters which each housed 6 students and contained bathrooms, a large kitchen and dining area, living room, quiet room, exterior roof garden, and patio. By combining two living suites, which were originally seperated a stair well, I created a more
intimate communityspace for students within the larger community [which would be uncg and ultimately Greensboro]. Both of the bedroom suites held three seperate spaces containing two beds each to total 12 beds per bedroom suite. All of the interior walls in the bedroom spaces were replaced with built-ins that acted as dividers providing some partial privacy yet giving a sense of unity within the other “rooms”. The dividers are all unique but contain details that visually tie them together, such as their dual functions and screen like appearances. The purpose behind this gesture of making two units
one whole, was to bring two small groups of different students together and provide different hiarchies of community
throughout the campus. As a precedent study I looked at Le Corbusier’s Unite de Habitacion because of the different formuals created of mixing levels of individual living compartments.

A Retail + Office Space for a Designer

I proposed that the designer in this space was an industrial designer in need of a studio, resource library, client meeting space, and retail space. My concept was 'Convergence" and revolved around the idea that a designers process is a static and never ending process.

I struggled through this project but learned alot mainly through the struggles. I am definately not satisfied with the end result but it was more about the process, as is with most of our projects. Because it is through the process and the development of the concept where the learning takes place.

This project involved renovating an existing warehouse located in downtown Greensboro. The client, a textile designer needed both a design studio as well as a retail / gallery space and an area for her children and babysitter. My concept was the idea of layering elements in the space which was inspired by looking at an artichoke and its segmentation.

I love this program. Our professors are constantly challanging us and encouraging us to push our ideas farther. The program is very diverse in the design disciplines that they teach. We study everything from graphic design, lighting design, residential and commercial interiors ( retail, hospitality, office environments, education ).

Hi everyone!
This is my first post on my new blog...so exciting! I have a few other blogs but I decided that sense this is the begining of a new year I should start fresh. I see this blog as a way to document my work, share with others, and as a way to hold myself accountable to keep drawing, creating, and designing. I hope that it will also force me to start getting more serious about annotating and keeping record of my thought process throughout the design process. I hope this post is the first of many and that each one will show a progression of growth. Hopefully this time next year I can scroll back through this blog and see how I have grown...as an artist, a designer, a student, and a person.
